Signs you are in need of new brake pads and/or brake rotors
- Squeaking and grinding coming from brakes
If your brake pads are nearing the end of their lifespan, the first sign you’ll notice is a squeaking or squealing sound when you brake. This noise usually occurs when the pads have worn down significantly. As the pads continue to wear, you may eventually hear a grinding noise. Some brake pads are equipped with built-in metal wear indicators that produce a loud sound to warn you when it’s time for a replacement. At this point, you’ll also start to damage the rotors, which can lead to more costly repairs.
- Vibration when braking
If you notice your car shaking when you apply the brake pedal, it indicates an issue with the brakes. This is often caused by uneven rotors, which can no longer provide a smooth surface for braking, leading to uneven brake performance. It’s important to have a professional inspection and repair the issue.
- Vehicle taking longer to stop
Loss of performance when applying the brake is another sign that your brakes need to be inspected. This means that the vehicle is experiencing less than ideal-stoppage times. The reasoning behind this may be due to the brake pads being worn down completely or that the brake fluid is low (possibly due to a leak). For a more accurate diagnosis, it is best to check with a mechanic as soon as possible.
- Warning lights coming on
There are two different warning lights that may come on: ABS (Antilock braking system) and the brake system warning lights.

A thorough brake repair goes beyond just replacing brake pads or shoes and bleeding the brake system. It may also involve:
- Inspecting, rebuilding, or replacing brake calipers
- Resurfacing or replacing rotors or drums
- Inspecting and replacing wheel cylinders or the master cylinder
- Inspecting and repacking or replacing wheel bearings
- Replacing hardware and spring kits on drum brakes as necessary
- Checking backing plates and all brake lines
- Flushing the entire brake system
